Donna Maddox testified for the defense on Day 29 as a qualified forensic psychiatrist. Based on evaluations that began in 2014, she diagnosed Timothy Ray Jones, Jr. with schizophrenia and described reported hallucinations, medication changes, cognitive testing, and further testing she recommended. She testified that synthetic cannabis contributed to symptoms but did not, in her opinion, account for symptoms that continued during confinement and treatment.
Maddox also described a decline in verbal-fluency testing, recommended neuropsychological testing, and later ordered an MRI. Her report was accepted as Court's Exhibit 120 for identification. She testified that Jones underreported rather than intentionally faked symptoms.
Solicitor Rick Hubbard questioned Maddox about the diagnostic basis for schizophrenia and unspecified neurocognitive disorder, later testing attributed to Dr. Kruse, medication, synthetic cannabis, and Jones's employment and daily functioning. Maddox maintained that her 2014 observations established psychosis, but said the causes of the psychosis and cognitive impairment remained uncertain. She agreed that Jones had not been observed at SCDC responding to internal stimuli or displaying disorganized thought or behavior.
On redirect, defense counsel established that Maddox had previously been retained to work for the State in another Lexington death-penalty case.
